You for sure ask Your self WHY THE VGT TRUBOS FAIL!
Most common reason for a VGT turbo failures are:
- high EGT (exhaust gas temperature).
- poor or lack of lubrication
Here are some tips on EGTs:
- install a pyrometer if You don't have it. Put the pyro sensor on the outside of the turbo's exhaust housing. When You are pulling on hills (for example), and Your pyro temperature goes to 850 (or more) degrees, You need to back off the foot from acelerator, and downshift - that will make it cooler.
-
When You are done with the driving, DO NOT SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE RIGHT AWAY! Leave it idling for 2-3 minutes at least. You can check the pyro again, if the temp is under 550 degrees it is ok to shut it down, if it is still at 650-700 degrees, leave it idling for additional 2-3 minutes.
- Make sure that You use oil according the manufacturer's specification.
- Change the engine oil regularly.
- EGR delete will prevent additional carbon in oil, and that will help Your engine oil to stay fresh for longer – which will result with Your turbo lasting longer.
